A Healthier Lifestyle Gets You Ready for Swimsuit Season

I don’t know about you but maintaining a healthy lifestyle is always a challenge. Although my kids are grown, I found a new challenge, being less active, which has led to weight gain. When your kids are young you tend to be more active because they are pulling you in all directions. When they are babies they take contact care and when they get older all of their school and after-school activities keep you active and running from place to place. When your kids grow up you can become less active. While you might go out to work or shop you don’t tend to run around from place to place daily or run up and down the steps ten time a day like you used to.

If you are a blogger or work at home you have even more of a challenge. You might spend a lot of time sitting in one place and the longer you sit the less active you become. This has become my problem. I find that I am now getting “blogger butt” from sitting all day. I turned 50 this past year and now my metabolism is slowing down too.

Exercising More

What I have started to do is discipline myself to use the treadmill. I also live in New England and it is cold 8 months out of the year so I can’t wait for warmer weather to arrive to exercise. I now use the treadmill for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, 3 days a week. Yes, exercising at home can be boring and that makes it hard to get yourself going to do it. What I do is make sure there is a good TV show on – either a daytime talk show like Ellen where there is a lot of fun and action going on, a quick sitcom, news, House Hunters (one of my favorites on TLC) or even a movie. When you know there is something to keep your mind occupied you are more likely to use that piece of exercise equipment instead of just hanging clothes on it.

It’s not only good enough to eat less, you have to exercise if you ever want to look good in a bathing suit or shorts for summer. You can lose weight but then your muscles won’t look toned.

Eating Lighter

We are starting to eat lighter too. For lunch I have a lot of fresh fruit and maybe a bagel toasted with cheese on top. I also eat cottage cheese and fresh tomatoes. We grow our own when it gets warm and we eat them right out of the garden.

I found that you don’t have to give up what you like, just eat less of it, exercise to burn off fat, and don’t indulge in so many treats. I love sweets and treats and that is definitely my downfall. I haven’t given them up completely, just cut back, and now am exercising more – which I think is the key. Actually, balance is the key to keeping the weight off and then you don’t have to go on diets.

I also stock more snacks and meals that have less calories. I am going to be trying Weight Watchers Smart Ones to see if they will help me maintain the weight I have and fill up my snack craving. I actually had no idea they had such awesome dessert options and that they aren’t that they don’t have that many calories or fat.

This Weight Watchers Turtle Sundae is only 130 calories and 3 grams of fat and it looks scrumptious. You can find a list of all of their desserts and meals at www.eatyourbest.com.
