Review of ThermaCell Mosquito Repellent

I just received a ThermaCell Mosquito repellent patio lantern and portable appliance to test out. We sat outside tonight because the weather is finally warm here in Connecticut but all of a sudden the mosquitos were out and biting us hard. I guess they were ready to go after this long, cold winter of being dormant.

The ThermaCell Mosquito patio lantern is a two-in-one product that both repels mosquitos and gives you an outdoor light. The lantern portion requires 4 AA batteries which are not included. The portable unit does not require batteries because there is no light in it.

Each product comes with a ThermaCell butane cartridge and 3 mosquito repellent cartridges. The butane is designed to last up to 12 hours and each cartridge is designed to last up to 4 hours each. The repellent cartridges are blue and when they turn white you know the repellent is gone and you need to replace it.

Watch my video to see how easy it is to setup and use the appliance and lantern. Just insert the butane cartridge in the base, put it back together, insert a repellent cartridge on the top – no mess – and turn it on.

Within a minute the butane cartridge heats up the metal element that the mosquitos repellent cartridges sits on and then the repellent is disbursed throughout the air.

The lantern packaging says that it repel mosquitos up to 225 square feet and the appliance is designed to repel mosquitos in a 15 x 15-foot area. We didn’t sit out all that long so it was really hard to tell if it worked well or not but it did keep most of the mosquitos away, although not all.

The ThermaCell mosquitos repellent lantern and appliance are convenient to use and there is definitely no oil, spray, or mess of any kind.

You can purchase the units and refill cartridges at Walmart, ThermaCell.com, Home Depot, Tractor Supply, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and other retailers. Check out the ThermaCell site for other locations near you.

6/19 Update: We did find that you have to put the Thermacell unit outside for 5 to 10 minutes and start it up for it to start work. Unfortunately, it never really protected us as well as we had liked so we gave this a 4 star rating instead of 5.
