The Colonial Hotel: Where to Get Married in Southern Massachusetts

We just came back from a weekend wedding in Massachusetts that was held at the Colonial Hotel. The wedding and staff were so organized and the atmosphere so elegant that I had to write about it.

I had the chance to do a walk-through video of the Colonial Hotel. Take a look at the beautiful layout and rooms.

The Colonial Hotel is located in Gardner, in Massachusetts, just off Route 140. It took us just about an hour and a half to drive from Connecticut. It sits back in the woods so it is private from the main road. When you turn into the driveway you are presented with a huge parking lot. If you are staying or dropping off someone you can drive right to the front door that is sheltered by large roof. This is a bonus I thought because when we arrived it was raining.

I walked right into the foyer where a wedding was in progress. I even got to listen to the bride and groom exchange vows. It was pretty cool to find out that this wedding had been scheduled for outside but because it started raining they setup the chairs in the foyer/living room area and had the wedding party and bride, groom and Justice of the Peace at the base of the steps. What was more impressive was that after it was over they had the chairs all carted away in less than 10 minutes. As soon as the vows were taken and the people started to go outside under the covered area by the front door about 15 staff members came out of nowhere to clean it all up. It was impressed!

This is a picture of that wedding.

The staff at the front desk are pleasant and super organized. They had our reservation all set and even had a gift bag for us, made up by our future bride and her bridesmaids. They gave us breakfast vouchers too because that was part of the wedding weekend.

Next to the front desk is a 24/7 store where you can buy snacks in case you are hungry in the middle of the night. Off the front area is the main floor hallway with an elevator to the second floor rooms. You can also walk up the steps in the center to get to the second floor rooms.

To the right of the front door is a long hallway leading to the banquet rooms, dining room/pub and wedding chapel.

You pass by a room with vending machines that even has video game machines for the kids in it. I thought that was neat, especially since they made the glass window darkened and reflective and you couldn’t see inside of the room except when you passed the doorway. It kept the ambiance elegant at the same time giving kids something to do if they got bored.

Beyond that room was a hallway to go to the outside where they had a huge covered tent setup for the originally scheduled outside wedding’s reception.

In the center of the hall was the dining room and pub. If you want to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, or have a drink this is where you go. It had a large TV on in the center for those who like to watch sports.

Further down the hallway I spotted some of the bridal party lounging on the couches along the walls.

Almost to the end I came upon the Concord banquet hall that was being setup for our wedding. Since it is Fall the bride and groom decided on Fall colors so it was all done up in earth tones. The tables looked beautiful.

Outside of the reception hall they had a table that would eventually have appetizers on it and on the other side of the hall a large table that was to be used for place settings guests picked up to find their table. This table could be used for other things if a bride and groom decided they wanted the place settings already on the tables.

There was a small bar built-in to the far wall so guests at the reception could buy drinks if they wanted. It was neat because it was a room that they opened up that was built right into the wall. You could hardly tell it was there until they opened up the front window.

The whole place is quality like that. The decor is rich and makes you feel like you are in a castle.

At the very end of this long hall was the wedding chapel. The DJ was getting his gear all setup for the wedding march music and chairs were already setup. Each chair was covered and had a bow on the back. An arch is placed at the far wall and is draped with sheer fabric, flowers, and lights. If you look to the left you see a wall. They move that wall back once the wedding is over and it attaches to the reception hall. The chapel then turns into the dance floor and they put the head table there for the wedding party. Very ingenious! They planned this building so well.

Since I wasn’t involved with the preparation I don’t know if the cake and flower arrangements are actually made up by Colonial Hotel staff but since everything seemed to blend so well I think maybe they offer those services as well. It would make sense that they would because it is much easier for everyone involved if all of the wedding services are under one roof.

Update: I found out from Megan that the Hotel offers you 3 different wedding packages based on what you want for your wedding and once you pick a package they give you a menu of all different types of foods to chose from. You get to pick the baker, photographer, DJ and florist.

I have to say, the actual hotel rooms were a quite disappointing though and we heard that from a lot of people. What I told them is that you don’t come to the Colonial Hotel for vacation stay, you come there for a wedding or event. The room you are only going to stay in overnight and it’s not bad, just old and dated. You are going to spend all of your time visiting with family and friends, dancing the night away, and enjoying the wedding or other event you came for.

Update from The Colonial Hotel: We are planning further renovations to the hotel in the off season (November-March), to include a full spa facility, renovations to the guest rooms and ballroom area, and a new pool.

The Colonial Hotel knows how to run events and we saw this at every turn. You never had to wait for anything. If the appetizers were out they would whisk the plates away and bring more – they were fabulous by the way. I wholeheartedly suggest that you get the bacon wrapped scallops if you are having a wedding. As I noted above, when the outside weather didn’t cooperate, they knew exactly what to do.

If you are looking for a great place to hold your wedding or corporate event, I highly recommend the Colonial Hotel. I was super impressed by how well everything was organized. Everything went off without a hitch and we had a marvelous wedding weekend.
