Moms and Dads, mark your calendars….it’s time for DATE NIGHT! April 7th through 9th, Savor: A celebration of Wine, Food & Spirits is coming to the Connecticut Convention Center. The three-day event will spotlight some of the world’s top culinary talent in partnership with celebrity chef Robert Irvine, host of the Food Network’s “Restaurant: Impossible.” Irvine will be joined by other well-known chefs, world-renowned vintners and spirits enthusiasts who will come together to share their love for exquisite flavors with the local community. Leave the kids at home and enjoy a vast selection of local dishes from regional restaurants, culinary demonstrations, and wine, beer and fine spirits tastings. This is truly an upscale event that will indulge your taste buds to all the culinary delight that New England has to offer.

In preparation for this amazing event, we were invited to a press event hosted by the new Vue 24 Restaurant at Foxwoods Resort Casino (Savor’s proud sponsor), on the 24th floor of the beautiful Grand Pequot Tower hotel. Let me tell you, this place is gorgeous. Talk about a view! You can see the entire skyline and beautiful Mashantucket property, golf course, sprawling forests and more. This restaurant is worth the view alone…but, their food makes it even better.

We were able to sample some amazing cuisine, from fried chevre to fruit smoothie “shooters” and a fabulous chateaubriand to die for. There was also a cold lobster-shrimp-orzo salad, house made potato chips and a bacon grilled cheese, among other treats. The dessert selection was just as impressive, with a decadent chocolate cake, chocolate covered strawberries, and cupcakes and macarons provided by the new Cake Restaurant by chef Franck Iglesias (also new to Foxwoods Resort Casino this spring!). You’ve got to experience it for yourself.

All the greats involved in Savor were present for our afternoon, including most of the chefs who will be providing the amazing food for the event. The leading man in this year’s Savor line up Chef Robert Irvine will be generously donating proceeds from every Savor ticket purchased to his charity “The Robert Irvine Foundation”, a not-for-profit organization that honors the men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces, military personnel (active, retired and veterans) and their families as well as organizations that support such individuals. In fact, they are having a charity Gala on Saturday April 9th to raise awareness for this foundation.  In his true to life style, Chef Irvine invited sailors, seamen, and officers from the United States Navy to join us for this event and took time to talk with all of them. We even got a chance to chat with Chef Irvine as well. He dished out his feelings about the military (since we were a military family ourselves), his plans to help improve the notoriously yucky MRE military rations, and even gave us some great advice about kids in the kitchen (more on that later!). He is truly a what-you-see-is-what-you-get, no nonsense kind of guy, and it was a real pleasure talking with him.
