Dyson DC41 Animal Vacuum Review (Video)

If you have pet hair then you know how much you need a good vacuum cleaner. The Dyson DC41 Animal is the newest vacuum on the market to tackle deep ground-in dirt and pet hair. In our house we have 2 long-hair cats and some days we have cat hair tumbleweeds rolling down the hallway.

What I like about the Dyson DC41 Animal Vacuum

The DC41 provide enough suction to remove the cat hair and deep down dirt in the area rugs and carpet we have in our house. It is true that this new Dyson Animal goes from hardwood floor to carpet easily without losing any suction. This new model has found a way to keep constant suction and this is particularly helpful if you have a pet hair issue. There is a button next to the On/Off switch that will disengage the beater if you are on the hardwood floor but we found that leaving it on it easier.

I liked the way that the larger beater (vacuum head) swiveled, it made it easier to maneuver the vacuum cleaner around furniture and in corners. Emptying the canister was as easy as pressing two buttons while holding the canister over a trash can or bag. The handle on the top of the canister made it easier to carry the DC41 up and down stairs. The cord is extremely long reducing the number of times I have to change outlets while vacuuming. The button to turn off the beater when moving from carpet to floors was within easy access and just required a simple press of the finger.

What I didn’t like about the Dyson DC41 Animal Vacuum

There are a few minor things that I thought that could be done better, but those are overshadowed by the vacuuming power. The on/off button could be located higher up the handle instead of where it currently is, near the canister release button. A couple times instead of turning the vacuum off, I released the canister. It would be nice of the cord could be retractable, but that would probably require making the vacuum cleaner larger. I believe the cord should attach to the vacuum vertically instead of horizontally. As it currently is, when you wrap the cord, it puts a bend on the cord that cause broken wires over time. When emptying the canister, dust would settle on the bottom canister door, so I had to clean off the dust to make sure a tight seal occurred. It would be nice if the small beater head attachment point swiveled up and down, doing that would allow it to get flatter and reach under furniture that was only three or four inches off the floor.

If you have a hard time using a vacuum you may want to consider that the Dyson is quite heavy. The weight might be a problem for some if you have to move it up and downstairs. The hose is extra long for using on stairs so that might solve the problem.

Where to Buy the Dyson DC41 Animal

We bought ours at Best Buy but you can buy this new Dyson at a variety of stores and online at Dyson.com. It is also available at Amazon.com. The cost is $599. On Amazon the shipping is free and they have a great return policy. We buy almost everyone we buy online at Amazon because it is so convenient having everything in one place.

Dyson sells all kinds of neat attachmentsthat fit all of the Dyson models. The one I like the most is the Flat Out tool that allows you to get under furniture much easier. Another is the Dyson Pet Clean-Up Accessory Kit that comes with:

  • Flexi Crevice Tool; Extends & Flexes to Clean Awkward Gaps & Tight Spaces
  • Mattress Tool; To Remove Dust & Dirt from your Mattress & Upholstery

The attachments (except for the smaller beater head) snap onto the body to make them easy to store. This is the Mini turbine head that is included with all Dyson Animal uprights and canisters to help to clean pet and dirt from hard to reach places such as stairs, upholstery and in the car.

This is the small beater attachment you can use to clean up pet hair on furniture and to get around small places and under tables and desks.

To empty the canister, just press the button on the top near the handle, pull it off, put it over your trash can and press the release button.

The Dyson DC41 Animal sucks up a LOT of dirt and hair (see pictures above). You may need to clean out the canister a couple of times when you are cleaning your house.

Overall, ever with the couple minor issues, I believe the Dyson DC41 Animal is worth the cost. It worked great in picking up the cat hair from are two long-hair cats and has sturdy construction to make it last a long time.

Based on a comment and a review I read, I thought I would look into the issue about dust collecting around the mesh screen on the outside of the cyclone shroud.  The following video is my suggestion as to how to access that screen and remove any dust buildup.  I also find a section on page 8 of the Operating Manual labeled “Cleaning The Clear Bin” that talks a little about cleaning the cyclone shroud.  I did not encounter any apparent suction loss after re-assembly.

  1. Re: DC41 Animal

I am looking to purchase a Dyson vacuum cleaner. My questions is in regards to the attachments for the DC41 Animal.

    1. Are any of the attachments good for cleaning under couches, sofas, and beds?
    2. If there is such an attachment, how wide is the attachment? My concern is that I may have to get on my hands and knees for the attachment to vacuum under my furniture.
    3. Is the attachment wide enough so that it will take me approx 30 seconds to clean under my couch (sofa)?

I am looking at the DC41 because it weighs 17 lbs. The DC28 says it cleans under furniture and is 20 lbs.

    Thank for you help.

    • Karen,

      1. Probably the best attachment for cleaning under couches, sofas, and beds is the Dyson Flat Out Tool Accessory. There is a link in our article (neat attachments) that will take you to several different attachments. I have not used the Flat Out Tool, but reviews I read say it works good for cleaning under furniture.

      2. I am not sure how wide the Flat Out Tool is, maybe 12 inches. Not having used the tool, I am not sure if one needs to get on hands and knees to clean under furniture. I think it depends upon whether or not the furniture is accessible from at least three sides and depth of the furniture. I think one would have to at least squat down some amount to at least get the non-flexible part of the hose closer to the floor, thus being able to get the tool further under the furniture.

      3. It depends upon how big your couch is.

      Thank you,

Hi Greg and Wendy, Thanks for the review.
I have a question that I couldn’t find the answer for it online:
Is the wand telescopic (can you make it shorter while using it)? Because on their site it says telescopic wand.

    Eyal Knaany

    • Eyal,

Yes, the wand will extend out (telescopic) of the hose portion. The hose will also increase in length as one pulls on it and return to its normal length when no longer being pulled.

      Thank you,

      • Eyal Knaany says:

Thank you for your response. Just to make sure that we are talking about the same thing. I am talking about the Metal wand that you pull out when you want to use the hose. Can you change the length of it (the metal wand)?

        Eyal Knaany

        • Eyal,

Yes, we are talking about the same wand. However, the wand on ours is made of a rigid plastic.

          Thank you,

          • Eyal Knaany says:

Thank you. I have the DC25 and yes you were right the wand is plastic. In the DC25 the wand is a set length and not telescopic. Can you change the length of the DC41’s plastic wand even when it is not attached to the hose?

          • Eyal,

Yes, the length can be changed. On the DC41 the wand can not be removed from the hose, but it slides (telescopes) in and out of the hose. When the wand is fully extend, it will lock in place.

            Thank you,

          • Eyal Knaany says:

Thank you for all your help 🙂

          • Eyal Knaany says:

Now I can repay you by making your life easier :-). I just found an HSN clip online where they show that you can also detach the wand from the hose for easier use.
Fast forward to the time 13:25.

          • Eyal,

            Thank you for that information.

  3. Thanks for the review. I’ve had my DC41 animal for a couple of weeks now and love it….however I am wondering if you know how to clean the purple housing behind the fine mesh screen?? Thanks!

    • Lee,

Will you provide more information as I am not sure where on the DC41 you are talking about? I know there are two filters that should be cleaned about every three months.

      Thank you,

  4. Greg,

I was referring to the part that houses the turbos and the long filter. About half way down there is a mesh screen around the circumference. Dust just keeps accumulating behind that screen. I checked Dyson’s website and some other forums but the only thing I found was something in a review on Amazon stating a design flaw…any suggestions?

    • Lee,

Thank you for the clarification. I did some research and we are making update to the post about this and includes my suggestion.

      Thank you,

      • Hi there,

We’ve noticed your comments and hope can clarify the situation a little.

The mesh shroud won’t usually require regular maintenance, but if any debris does accumulate on it, this can be removed easily with a soft brush once the bin and cyclone pack are separated.

It’s normal for a little fine dust to show up behind the shroud after a period of use – this won’t effect performance in any way, and is nothing to worry about.

  5. Actually you should have the whole cyclonic chamber professionaly cleaned by a vacuum shop that has the tools to open up and clean out all of the multi cyclones as well as the main house.Mold,Bateria.Fungus will grow very quikly in these areas and can cause health problems. The dirt you see containes these harmful germs and the bagless chamber is just an incubater for them. Also the dirt will clog the Cyclones and quickly rob suction power. You dont have to buy bags but you do have to touch and breath the harmful dirt from these machines.Thats why most doctors dont recommend them over Hepa bag vacuums like Riccar or Miele.Hope this helps everybody.

  6. What a load of pants! All that fine harmful dust is filtered out of the airflow, followed by going through a hepa filter before it leaves the machine, the cyclones don’t block, that’s what makes dyson, well dyson!
You do of course come into contact with the dust when emptying the machine, so empty it outside.. As you would any bagless machine.
You could use compressed air to clean out the behind the mesh screen. But unless the look of the dust is what bothers you it won’t affect performance. Just give the cyclones a good tap when you empty it.

These machines have been the BEST machines for my asthma. I like dust in my vacuum, not in my house 😀

I have a DC41 and cannot use my attachments because the lady that used it the first time somehow took the red handle off the hose..i do not think this should separate…I think the regular vacumn is great…have their been any issues with the red handles?

  8. I just bought the DC41 for Christmas. I just took out of the box because I just couldn’t wait. It is by far the best vacuum cleaner I have ever used. There is only one feature that I do not like. I do not like the way it clicks to release the vacuum in a downward position or to move the handle in a upward position, I have two full grown yellow labs and a black lab that visits frequently so I have a lot of hair in the house. My old vacuum did not put a dent in the hair/dirt, but the DC41 has already made a huge impact.

  9. Just came across your post and I really appreciate the added info on cleaning out the rigid purple mesh screen. I just popped my DC41 Ball open for the first time after purchasing it 6months ago for basic house cleaning in a 20-yr old suburban house.

My purple screen was nearly clogged on the outside by fine dust that I tried to dry brush away, but I found at least another 1/4″ of fine, dark gray dust sitting at the bottom inside the screen which I will have to hope that my shop vac can take care of tomorrow. In the meantime, the white cylinder (washable) filter inside the cyclones is pristine white – a bit concerning as my house is obviously loaded with dirt based on the rest of the machine.

Tackling the filter inside the ball after dinner tonight and am quite curious to see if it is equally clean.
